ANSC 3040
Animal Reproduction, University of Guelph
This course provides undergraduate students with a comprehensive foundation in the anatomy and physiology of reproduction in domestic animals (bovine, ovine, caprine, swine, equine, canine, feline, and avian species), with emphasis on the implications for reproductive health and management.
To achieve its objectives, the course combines dynamic classroom lectures with hands-on laboratory experiences. The laboratory component enables students to apply and reinforce theoretical knowledge using real specimens, gametes, and embryos from multiple species, while also gaining exposure to equipment, technologies, and procedures widely employed in reproductive evaluation and the management of domestic animals.
The course format includes 36 presential lectures delivered in a conference hall, 1 online review lecture, and 10 hands-on laboratories. Each 80-minute laboratory session is offered 10 times within a week to allow small-group instruction and interactive activities, culminating in the delivery of 100 laboratory sessions per semester. Instruction is supported by six teaching assistants and one laboratory coordinator, all of whom are trained and supervised by Dr. Ribeiro throughout the semester.
In eight offerings of this course by Dr. Ribeiro, 1,531 students completed the course, and 27 teaching assistants (13 PhD students and 14 MSc students) were trained.
